This stamped brass backplate, (sometimes called a ‘grip plate’) is Neo-Gothic in design and dates from circa 1900. It was designed as part of a set, with a ‘ring handle’ being attached to it. Brass sheets were stamped  and then polished to achieve a highly-burnished finish. As a stamped product, it was a cheaper alternative to cast brass ornaments.
