History:

Newman Brothers produced a range of ornaments for coffins and caskets. This page shows range of ornaments from the Catholic roses and Sacred Heart to Masonic symbols. Many of Newman Brothers’ directors, including John Kellett were Masons, and the ‘Square and Compasses’ ornament proved to be a popular product at Newman Brothers.

In this case, the letter “G” is depicted in the centre. The letter has multiple meanings, and can stand for God, and in this context it can also stand for Great Architect of the Universe.  However, the letter also stands for Geometry, the basis of Masonic lore.
